Girl Scout Cookie Sales
Tribune photo published April 15, 1955

Front left to right: Zac Dunlap, of the Community Chest board; Susan Schoettler, a Brownie, and Diana Storby, a senior Girl Scout, get the Girl Scout cookie sale under way.  Mrs. L.C. Timm of the Scout council, and L. Simmering, representing schools, looks on.

Zac Dunlap operated Dunlap Motors with his father, Harry.  Mrs. L.C. Timm (Tippy Briley Timm) was the wife of Capp Timm, head coach for ISU baseball teams from 1937 to 1974.   Lawrence Simmering was the principal of Roosevelt School.

"With businessmen, mothers, fathers, schools and churches behind us we'll surely get ahead," say the Ames Girl Scouts, who launched their cookie and peanut sale today.  The sale will last through April 23.  Arrangements are being made by Mrs. L.C. Timm, finance chairman, and Mrs. Dick Griffith, chairman of the cookie sale, telephone -1955.

The Scouts are selling peanuts and intermediate Scouts and Brownies are selling cookies.  This is the only money-making project approved by the Ames council.  Profits from the sale provide funds for individual troop activities, arts, crafts and camping.  This revenue also partially pays for the cost of cook-outs and troop camping materials.

The date of this photo and the identities of the people inspecting the Union Story Bank vault are not known.  The image is assumed to be from 1955 since a portion of the SAVE & THRIVE IN 55 sign is visible above the vault door.
