4th Ward Coffee Club

The 4th Ward Coffee Club celebrated its 10th birthday Tuesday morning in the Trueblood's College Shoe Store, 2544 Lincoln Way, with three of the "charter members" present. They are Andy Maitland, Oscar Trueblood and C.M. Peterson. the informal club meets Tuesday and Friday mornings for an hour or so to talk sports or civics or business. Left to right are: seated - Don Ross, Joe Sclarow, J.W. Minear [Minert]; standing - Jon Morgan, Norman Lindquist, Peterson, Lew Van Der Wilt, Erb Hunziker, John Stuckey, Cal Weaver, Maitland and Trueblood. Other original members are Glen Malander and Connie Stephenson.

J. W. Minear was the name originally
published in the photo caption, quite possibly a misprint for
J. W. Minert, owner of the High View
Motel at 2322 Lincoln Way
Cal Weaver was for more than 40 years, the
proprietor, jeweler and watchmaker
for Weaver Jewelers at 2416 Lincoln Way.
Don Ross, associated with Reynolds
& Iverson since 1927, was at first manager,
and then starting in 1939, owner of Student
Supply Store at 2424 Lincoln Way.
Jon Morgan was at first a photographer for,
and later owner of College Town Studio at
109 Welch.
Erb Hunziker operated Hunziker & Furman Builders from his home at 2810 Ross Road.
Lew Van Der Wilt was an educator and worked
as manager of the
Des Moines Register & Tribune Agency in
the basement of 2500 Lincoln Way.
After working in the advertising department
of the Des Moines Register and Tribune,
John and Esther Stuckey owned and operated
College Pipe Shop at 2500 Lincoln Way for 43 years.
C.M. Peterson - Ben Franklin Store, 2532 Lincoln Way
Joe Sclarow - Joe's Men's Shop, 2536 Lincoln Way
Oscar Trueblood ran Trueblood College Shoe
Store
at 2544 Lincoln Way for more than 50 years.
Norman and Ardath Lindquist took over Lindquist
Cleaners at 120 Hayward following the
retirement of Norman's father, Henning (Henry),
who had started the business in 1926.
